Frequency Words] are words that good readers should instantly
recognize without having to "figure them out." Many of
these words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow decoding
rules.

It is important
that your child learns Sight Words because these are the words that
are most frequently used in the English Language and they therefore
provide an essential starting point for learning to become a confident
reader.
One way of estimating a
primary student’s reading level is by having the student identify
the Dolch Basic Sight Words. The number of words recognized is the
basis for assigning his/her equivalent reading level.
